April in full swing!

I am hoping all of the students at SLE got in a lot of outdoors time this weekend.  With the long cold winter and many rainy days, the warm temps and sunshine were awesome!

There are only a few weeks until the OAA tests and we are in full test prep mode.  Please make sure your child is ontime to school each day to take part in these important reviews.

In math, both Mrs.Tucker and Mrs. Clements' classes will be finishing our unit on geometry this week and testing on Thursday.  In addition, Mrs. Scruby and Mrs. Westley are helping out with the math review during their Social Studies and Science classes.  There is a lot of content students are responsible for knowing, so again, attendance everyday and all day is very important.  At home, please keep practicing multiplication and division facts.

In reading, we cannot stress enough that students must read carefully, underline/circle key words and to look back in selection/text for their answers.   Even though an answer might make sense, if it is not stated in the text, it will be marked wrong.  We have a saying in 4th grade --- NO MSU!   That stands for NO MAKING STUFF UP!   When your child reads at home or brings home practice passages, please encourage him/her to look back in the text and prove to you where they have found answers to the questions they are asked.

Supplies seem to be a huge issue right now.   Multiple students are asking for pencils daily.   Students must have 2-4 sharpened pencils at the beginning of the day.  We have observed students being careless with their supplies, dropping them in the hall, breaking leads on purpose, over sharpening, etc.   Please supply your child with pencils and encourage them to be responsible with their school supplies.

This week in the Friday Folders were parent input forms for class placement for 5th grade at Columbia.  These forms must be turned back in by April 21st.

Spring Break Approaching!

Remember that next week there will be no school due to Spring Break.  I hope you all have a restful and fun week off.  Please remember to read occasionally and practice math facts.   Reading Calendars will be due on TUESDAY, APRIL 1ST.

Also, when we return we will be starting the 4th quarter and getting ready for the OAA test the first week in May.  We have A LOT to accomplish in the month of April and will need students focused and ready to learn when we return from break.  Warmer weather and sports schedules may make it difficult for work in homework and early bedtimes, but will be very important in this homestretch of the 2014-2015 school year.

March Forward!

Well, it seems like all of a sudden it is March!   Amazing how fast January and February flew by.  Of course all the ice and snow resulting in multiple snow days and delays made our weeks feel somewhat fractured.   Last week was the first 5-day "normal" week we have had since December --- just crazy.

As we enter March, there are some important dates coming up that should be noted:

Monday, March 3 - Spring School Pictures

Tuesday, March 4 - Blizzard Bags #1 & #2 Due - Remember this is the first set of assignments sent home over the 4-day President's Day weekend and count as 2 days of attendance for the additional days (over the allowed 5) our district has taken over the last couple months.   Bags not returned by Tuesday will be counted as 2 unexcused absences.

Tuesday, March 4 - February Reading Calendars Due

Friday, March 7 - SLE BINGO Night --- Come enjoy a fun time and support PTO!  Games and awesome prizes!!!

Thursday, March 13 and Thursday, March 20 - Spring Conferences will be held both nights from 4:00-7:30pm.  Conferences will be held with your child's reading teacher.   Look for your scheduled time to come home with your child this week.

Wednesday, March 19 - TPC Luncheon -- The finale to our Etiquette Program, students will be traveling to TPC for a special lunch.   Your child will be bringing home a special invitation this week that will give you more information about this very special event.

March 24 - 28 - Spring Break

BLIZZARD BAGS!

Blizzard Bags will be sent home on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH.  The work in the Blizzard Bag will cover the 2 days we are over the 5 calamity days.  This work will be sent home in a ziploc bag with a letter attached explaining the Blizzard Bag.  The work in the Blizzard Bag must be completed and returned by TUESDAY, MARCH 4TH or it will count as two unexcused absences against your child.  Thank you in advance for working with your child on the work in the Blizzard Bag.

Happy 2014!

As I sit here typing this, I am watching the fog roll in and waiting for the predicted snow to fall. I hope that everyone had a great winter break. Mine was quite busy with friends and family!

This week we will have some review from the week before break. We will spend the first day back waking up our brains and remember what we were learning before break. Many of topics will be wrapping up the next week or so as the 2nd quarter ends on Friday, January 10.

Math: Continue with our exploration of ways we can multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.

Strategies we have used thus far:
1.) Grid or box method. The students learned out to break a number down into the value of each digit and multiply using a window frame graphic organizer. We teach this method because it teaches the student to use the full value of each digit. It you would like to see a video explaining this method, please click HERE
2.) Lattice method. It you would like to see a video explaining this method, please click HERE
3. Traditional Algorithm

Reminder:
  • Review Sheets are due each Friday and are available for pre-check on Wednesday.
  • KEEP PRACTICING multiplication and division facts!!!
Language Arts:
Continue our study of POETRY and Poetic Devices
Spelling List #15 - Check SPELLING TIC TAC TOE for weekly assignment.
Reading Logs - Changing to MONTHLY READING CALENDARS. Students will also have a weekly reading assignment that will include repeated reading of an article and answering questions about that article.
